Julie Sanderson: "I Want The World" (JS)

Despite the album's title, Sanderson's music has a lot more to do with innocence than arrogance.  in fact, in the age of Alanis Morissette, she comes across as a hopelessly old-fashioned romantic, preoccupied with love or the lack of it.  She sings of her hope in a perfect world (and a perfect lover) on the title track, of her own fears and faults on "Jealousy," or of her sad conclusion that every silver lining is attached to a gray cloud on "One More Teardrop."

Her unguarded songwriting and the confessional tone of her voice help make this an unusually intimate collection of pop songs, enhanced by the remarkably subtle and resourceful guitar work of Pete Kennedy. -- Mike Joyce

Julie Sanderson I Want The World [Sanderson (1997)]

Songwriter Julie Sanderson made a wise choice in bringing Pete and Maura Kennedy as her only musicians on this recording.  Pete's production and guitar (along with bass and percussion) and Maura's backing vocals provide the perfect acoustic backing to Sanderson's pop/folk songs of love and longing.  The opener "I Want The World" is an up-tempo number that will have you humming along, as will many of the others.  Sanderson has a gift for writing strong melodies that hold up to repeated listening, and her lyrics ring true.  A thoroughly enjoyable recording.
